for what i remember, i think the bottom one works better relation with your webpage and book.
but for the upper one, i think you're trying to make the text more legible by bring the background darker to bring contrast. I don't know if that's necessary...because i can still see clearly on the bottom one. plus, it echoes the background picture more compare to the top one.
This is the poster for the Gutenberg. I chose the section of the movable metal type.I played with perspective for the type and add some element from the book in using the same typeface.
Very dynamic. Quite different from the book, other than his name and the color of the bottom section.
I agree that the darker, higher contrast, version (#1) has more punch, but we also lose a lot of the visual interest of the photo. Maybe a middle ground between the two versions here?
Maybe pull back the perspective type - make a little smaller - and incorporate something from the book design to pull the two "channels" together, making them seem more like a suite of items? Like the stripes from the book cover design?
