Poster Ideations.
Turns out I had some bit of a process. Here are some (overly late) ideations.
Here is the evolution of my poster from what I started with and at the last moment (thanks to a kick in the arse from a friend who thought the original idea was boring). The last one is my final poster.

Jaezar Soriano - Project 3 Poster and Webpage
Hi everyone. Here's my poster. It's supposed to have two parts. One is the bold obvious message advertising my book, and the second is a subtle representation of the evolution of type in the background.
My webpage can be found at this URL:

Couldn't decide which to print; the top I think more obviously matches the layout of my book, but I think the bottom is more interesting.
Fenglei, Poster and Web page Ideation
I want to emphasize the X on the word Experimental, because most of the the time you won't know the result of an experimenting project, until you did it.
The poster background and the web page's X use halftone screen dots as a the pattern, that will make the association with print typography, since before digital area, the major study of the typography is largely based on the printing media. I use 2 color according to the rule "the simpler the stronger", because I think the poster's main purpose is give an strong and fast overview, servers as one of the book's supplemental medias.
The entire layout is trying to point out that experimental work will lead your achieving the better Inspiration when you design an artwork, although most of the time your will not preset a result or your main goal.

poster comps
I couldn't upload pdfs because there were errors in uploading. I experimented with blue, black and red text. I think red looks better because it goes better with my book which has a red cover. I would also like to know if "children's book typography" placed on the bottom or top of the page is better and if the girl's silhouette is better scaled smaller or larger. I think children's book typography goes better on the top and the silhouette is better larger. I think my choices give a more complete feel to a poster. The last poster is my choice.

James Molgaard - Poster Ideation
A little late to be posting this, but here are some of the different ideas that I was working with while working on the poster.
Close to final poster...ha.
So, I decided to use more color and incorporate cyan as the railroad tracks and "tunnel" so to speak. I used more texture and had a separate more legible paragraph that is informative, displaying connection between the modernization of the printing press and steam engine. I added more boxcars and scaled the train to a larger size.

Final Grotesk Poster
Final Poster.
The blood splatter is much more "splattery."
The blood also is splashing upward instead of just down.
'Grotesk' is smaller.
The A has changed from Garamond to Akzidenz-Grotesk.
The feet now have a slight third dimension to them with the open cut.
It's 10:35 and I am STILL in 141 with a box of cheez-it's, a couple of redbulls and a bottle of vodka. FUCK YEAH!

Final Poster Ideation
So I'm working towards this poster idea. I wanted to create a graphic by having the letter "H" in read and sort of like a shadow stacked behind it. I wanted to place the important information in it such as the year Helvetica was developed and who develop it. I then remembered that I had this quote in my book, and also in my webpage, so I decided, why not have it on my poster as well. As for the big bold Helvetica...i use the color Red for the first letter just so it can stand out and then I decided to play with this gradient color from dark to light with the rest as it read from left to right starting with the E to the A...

webpage design and my design statement
A webpage design that contains Peter Bi'lak's article- experimental typography. whatever it means. "It's just an experiment" is actually a quote i got from the article. The diagonal bar is positioned as fixed so it remains at the same spot as the page scrolls down.
From what I get, "just experimenting" is essentially the spirit of experimental typography. Experiment typography varies from graffiti to album cover designs but in general, they are all bold and beautiful; expressisve and creative. I tried to represent the boldness of experimental typography with massive bold diagonal forms and fonts. Also included some of my own experiment in the background which the bright color adds to its intensity.

Final Poster v2.1-Vincent
I tried to bring it closer to my original ideations by getting rid of the yellow background. I also brought back the quote. (By the way, the previous quote was a joke, although this one is pretty close to it. I think it makes the poster look cluttered, but if I make the text smaller it gets lost amongst the other text.
Webpage Ideations Again...Top, Mid, Bottom
So I incorporate the feedbacks I got. There's a quote below the header, it is the same quote I used for my book as well. I changed some of the text from just being to italic into being red italic. Just so some of the text is not all black.
There was a reason that I put the narrow column with the same text as the Jetset image but I just forgot to put my description of why I did it, but it is there now. I also put more image, the ones that I like. A few image of people using helvetica as a design for a shirt and mugs.
Final Poster v2.0-Vincent
I didn't think it was clear enough that this was an ad for the book, not a cover turned into a poster, so I added "In Stores May 19, 2009. I'm going to change the 75th anniversary to 80th Anniversary because that is closer to the actual anniversary for the publication. Also, not sure about the circle. I used it to highlight the title and also balance the cropped photo, but it doesn't seem quite as integrated into the design as before. Maybe I've been staring at the poster too much and need some fresh eyes.

Ok, here the revision with different quote. Right now, I really like the simplicity and minimal feel of the poster.Thx josh for all your advice. So do you think this works better? (^_^)

Another ideation
This is just a rough of another idea that I had. Just from the feedback I got from my previous post, I decided incorporating both ideas into one poster. Instead of having literal graphics of a railway system like my previous idea had, I decided the printing press would be play that part. I wanted the idea of the steam power to be a focus here and how it was crucial for the modernization of the industrial revolution at that time. The printing press and steam engine had paved the way for technology of the era and how it modernized society. Feedback?
Final Poster #7 ~ Zhen
hi josh, it's me again.
Now you have make an example with a quote, and saying that I cannot do that....is that mean I cannot use the quote only or the whole concept?
you said, "But I'm sure you can figure out something that is like my previous suggestion but not this example. That make sense?
previous message you said, "maybe just 'Tight' and a small caption or the like that says something about experimental typography?", in another font.
What if I use another quote? or is this still violating your idea. sorry about my lack of understanding, but I just want to do it right...(^_^)...thx u for your patience and willingness to answer all my questions. (^_^)!
