Book ideas

I'll be doing my book on Experimental type, with an emphasis on 60's-70's psychadelic posters (think Fillmore). My primary colors will be black and red (like my poster). As for the book itself, I'll be doing a 9x7 book (that's landscape folks) with offset margins. I'll be using a 6 row x 7 column grid to force asymmetry within the pages. Right now, I'm playing with 1" outside margins, but will definitely break them from time to time. As for fonts, I'll be using both a serif and sans serif font - one for readability and the other for captions and whatnot (so far, I'm thinking DIN and Garamond). Anyways, here is a screenshot and a pic of the flexibility my grid should offer.

Grid/Page Structure/Typeface/Color Composition for book

Here is my original idea for my grid, my book is going to be 9x7 and is going to talk about Swiss Style and its influences. I wanted to have a simple layout where I could have an image on one side of the page with a block of text on the other or two images or two text blocks. Right now the typeface I am using is Futura, but I think I want to see if I can find a different sans serif that was popular among Swiss Typographers. Colors will probably include a lot of black and white and most likely one other color that I am not sure of yet, it may be red, but I think I want to use something else. This is what I came up with....I may end up breaking it down a little more so there is more flexibility, maybe something like this..

Project 3: Style Guide

Alright, so here are some of my thumbnails and grid system that I'm developed. I choose to stay with my previous topic - Experimental Typography, because I can easily find good images, or just doing my own. Right now, I'm still debating on what font should I use, but most likely I'll choose some neutral font(s), so that it won't be too distracting or taking away attention from images. And in term of the color usage, I think I will use the RGB or CYMK since it's more saturated, I think it will be good for print....okie dokie, I think I've to go back to work more...(^_^) ~ zhen

I didn't stick to the '2 color' rule. Kinda missed that one. I remembered seeing 'color is good' in the syllabus, so I went with that.

This is only one small exploration of possibilities. At least 4-6 thumbnail sequences will give you the minimum amount of possible ideas.

After I do a number of explorations I wil choose a couple (possibly hybrids of some of my ideas) and then will go directly into Indesign and layout my grid according to my thumbnails.

Project 2 Concept Map: Modernism & Typography

Project 2 Concept Map V 2.3

There is my latest ideation. The squares are grouped from left to right in a progression of what led to what in Modernism. For instance, Progressivism, Purpose and Politics led to Vienna Secession, Constructivism, and Dadaism. That's why the last three follow the first three. I also added a timeline to further illustrate that, although these terms aren't following a strict time progression, the terms on the left lead to the terms on the right. I also added lines from one box to another to show which terms influenced which other terms. The line color and weight are determined by the color of the box. For instance, the lines coming from the Purpose box are a lighter blue and thinner than the ones coming from the Swiss Style box.

I was also working on this on the side, because I was unsure how effective my first idea was. Each box is a mini poster for each term with the other terms from the map that influenced that term inside. The boxes are ordered by hierarchy with the terms on the left with the thinner weight and the lighter blue boxes the lowest and the ones with the thickest weight and the darkest blue the highest.

What I think is interesting here is the child's interpretation of the letterforms. Which one's he has an easy time with and one's which he has a hard time understanding or just has not learned yet?

Interesting to watch with the adult - timing. The letterform is roken into components (as you learned in the calligraphy demo), but also notice the speed/change in speed, pauses, etc. It's a performance.
